With the 14-inch ThinkPad T420, Lenovo has made a couple of changes, switching the screen to the now-standard 169 aspect ratio and giving it the latest Intel 2nd Generation Core series CPU. DesignThe ThinkPad T420 follows the classic ThinkPad aesthetic business users have come to know and love over the years. The matte black, rubberized lid with its simple silver logo and raven black sides, bottom, and interior are all long-time ThinkPad staples, as is the tiny red TrackPoint pointing stick that sits between the G and H keys. Like previous ThinkPad T Series notebooks, the T420 is designed for durability. The rubberized ABS plastic lid, carbon-reinforced bottom, and internal roll cage help protect against shocks and x 10 x 1 inches and pounds with the high-capacity nine-cell battery, the ThinkPad T420 is a bit larger and heavier than the Toshiba Tecra R840 x x inches, pounds, but it's still lighter than the HP Elitebook 8460p 13 x x inches, pounds and the Dell Latitude E6420 x x inches, pounds with its extended battery. Using the standard six-cell battery cuts the T420's length to 9 inches and its weight to pounds. Lenovo's ThinkPad T420s, designed as a lighter alternative, weighs only 4 pounds and measures only x x inches.[Which ThinkPad is Right for You?]Keyboard, Pointing Stick, TouchPadThe classic, spill-resistant keyboard on the ThinkPad T420 features 7 rows with a full range of keys, even rarely used ones such as scroll lock and pause. Enlarged Esc and Delete keys make it easy to perform these frequent functions. The combination of strong tactile feedback and a smile-shaped key surface allowed us to achieve an 86 word-per-minute score with a 1-percent error rate on the Ten Thumbs Typing Tutor test, well above our 80 wpm average. However, the typing experience on the 13-inch ThinkPad X1 remains the industry's best because of that notebook's soft-touch palm rest and even more responsive other ThinkPads, the T420 has both a TrackPoint pointing stick and a touchpad. We're huge fans of the TrackPoint because it provides the most accurate way to navigate around the desktop short of using a mouse, and it allows you to move the pointer without lifting your fingers off of the home row. If you don't like pointing sticks, the 3 x textured touchpad provides accurate navigation around the desktop, and its two discrete mouse buttons provide just the right amount of feedback. However, multitouch gestures such as pinch-to-zoom are not smooth at ThinkPad T420 stayed pleasantly cool throughout our testing. After streaming video for 15 minutes, the touchpad measured a frigid 82 degrees, the keyboard an icy 81 degrees, and the bottom a cool 87 degrees Fahrenheit. We consider temperatures below 95 degrees and AudioThe 230-nit, matte display provided sharp images and plenty of desktop real estate thanks to its optional 1600 x 900 panel. When we watched a 1080p QuickTime trailer for the movie Point Blank, images were sharp and motion smooth with viewing angles solid up to 45 degrees to the left or right. However, when we streamed a 720p Flash episode of Fringe from the edges of objects seemed a little pixelated, perhaps because the screen had a higher resolution than the video. We highly recommend the 1600 x 900 panel, a $50 option, because it shows a lot more of your favorite web pages and documents without forcing you to not as high fidelity as audio-focused consumer notebooks such as the Dell XPS and the HP Envy series, the Lenovo ThinkPad T420 provides surprisingly good music playback. Whether we were playing Kool and the Gang's jazz-oriented "Summer Madness," the bass-heavy "Between the Sheets" by the Isley Brothers, or Motley Crue's guitar-laden "Looks that Kill," sound was accurate and loud enough to fill a medium-sized room. We could even make out a solid separation of sound between the speakers, which sit on either side of the and WebcamThe ThinkPad T420 has plenty of connectivity options, but it's missing a couple of the obvious ones. On the right side are an Express Card 34 slot, a 4-in-1 memory card reader, a USB port, and a USB/eSATA port. On the back are a FireWire port and a powered USB port that allows you to charge devices with the system off. The left side houses VGA, DisplayPort, Ethernet, and one more USB port for a total of four. Conspicuously absent are USB ports and HDMI-out, neither of which are even available as options. Considering that we've been seeing notebooks with USB for over a year now and that Lenovo offers USB on many other ThinkPads the X1 and W520, for example, this is a pretty glaring 720p webcam provided sharp images even in low-light situations. In our dark living room, fine details of our face were visible when we snapped a picture at 1280 x 720 and chatted on Skype in standard def. However, like with many other webcams, our face appeared shadowy if there was a bright light source directly behind; this occurred when we tried snapping a photo while sitting in front of a window with sunlight coming conferencing software features a unique keyboard noise suppression feature that, on our tests, completely muted the sound of our typing as we chatted on Skype. On PCMarkVantage, which measures overall performance, the T420 scored a strong 8,197, much higher than the 5,596 thin-and-light notebook category average, the 7,728 turned in by the Toshiba Tecra R840, and the HP EliteBook 8460p both have the same Core i5-2520M CPU.The 500GB, 7,200-rpm hard drive booted into Windows 7 Professional in a speedy 48 seconds, much faster than the 65-second category average. The drive took a modest 3 minutes and 5 seconds to complete the LAPTOP File Transfer test, which involves copying of mixed-media files. That's a rate of MBps, a little higher than the 26 MBps category average but well behind the MBps provided by the Dell Latitude E6420 and its 7,200-rpm Oxelon Media Encoder, the T420 transcoded a 114MB MPEG4 to AVI in 43 seconds, 15 seconds less than the thin-and-light average, and on a par with the Toshiba R840 41 seconds and the HP 8460p 42 seconds.GraphicsOur ThinkPad T420 review unit came with Nvidia NVS 4200M and Intel HD 3000 GPUs and Nvidia's Optimus graphics switching technology to toggle between the two for the best combination of battery life and performance. On 3DMark06, which measures overall graphics prowess, the ThinkPad T420 scored a strong 5,583, well above the 4,006 category average, the 5,060 provided by the Dell Latitude E6420 with its Intel HD 3000 integrated graphics, and the 5,032 scored by the HP EliteBook 8460p with its AMD Radeon HD 6470M ThinkPad T420 isn't a gaming system, but its discrete graphics chip is good enough to get decent frame rates on some popular titles. At autodetect settings, the T420 provided a solid 61 frames per second when playing World of Warcraft, a little less than the 86 fps category average, but much higher than the 41 fps that the Dell Latitude E6420 got and the 52 fps scored by the HP EliteBook 8460p, and impressive given that most notebooks in the category have lower resolution screens. With special effects turned up, the rate dropped to a still-solid 32 the more demanding Far Cry 2, the ThinkPad T420 got a solid 37 fps at 1024 x 768 resolution, on a par with the fps category average. When we upped the resolution to 1600 x 900, that rate dropped to a modest 25 fps, which is comfortably above the 20 fps category LifeWith its nine-cell extended battery, the ThinkPad T420 lasts all day and then some. On the LAPTOP Battery Test, which involves continuous surfing over Wi-Fi, the notebook lasted a whopping 10 hours and 36 minutes, more than double the 515 category average and the battery life of the T420s 5 hours. That time is also significantly longer than the HP EliteBook 8460p 601 and the Toshiba Tecra R840 634. Only the Dell Latitude E6420 with its extended battery came close, lasting 8 OptionsThough our review unit carries an MSRP of $1,179, the ThinkPad T420 starts at just $789. For that price, you get a Core i3 CPU, integrated graphics, a 1366 x 768 display, but the same 500GB hard drive and 4GB of RAM as our review unit. If you want discrete graphics, you'll need to buy the $1,089 model that comes with a Core i5 CPU and 1600 x 900 screen, along with its Nvidia NVS 4200 GPU. Configuration options include a choice of storage 320/500GB hard drive or 128/160GB SSD, up to 8GB of RAM, a choice of Core i3, i5, or i7, and several different Wi-Fi cards. Strangely, the webcam and fingerprint reader are not standard, costing $20 and $30 matter what other options you choose, both the 1600 x 900 screen $50 and the nine-cell battery $50 are absolute musts for maximizing your productivity and Fingerprint Reader, and WarrantyLenovo bundles the ThinkPad T420 with the standard set of ThinkVantage utilities. Among these are the ThinkVantage Power manger, which allows you to exert fine control over the system's power profile. We particularly like the Instant Resume feature, which keeps the Wi-Fi card active for 10 or more minutes after you put the notebook to sleep so you don't have to wait for the system to reconnect after you wake utilities include Access Connections from managing your wireless connections, Password Manager, and Rescue and Recovery for Backups. The T420 also comes with Corel DVD Movie Factory for burning ThinkPad T420 comes with a powered fingerprint reader that can read your fingers even when the system is off. Lenovo ThinkPad T420s MSRP $ “The LenovoT420s is an excellent laptop for business users, and also well worth the consideration of consumers who prefer an excellent keyboard and durable design to flashy aesthetics.” Pros Durable construction High-resolution display Excellent performance Reasonable price Cons Not particularly thin or light Lackluster battery life Display isn’t great for multimedia The ThinkPad T Series is an elder among laptops. IBM introduced the first laptop in the line, the T20, about 12 years ago. Since then the series has been consistently updated and has never once been removed from the market. Only the ThinkPad X Series has enjoyed a similar tenure. IBM’s original T20 was offered only with a display, but over the years the line has expanded. High performance and variants were made available. More recently, Lenovo decided to spin off a thinner, lighter version — resulting in the T420s. Though this is the thin-and-light version of the T420, don’t mistake it for an Ultrabook. The display and maximum thickness of just over one inch seemed modern when the original T400s arrived in 2009, but today it’s merely average. It does allow for a standard Core i5-2520M processor, however, which means performance should be much better than what is provided by today’s thinnest laptops. Lenovo is debuting an Ultrabook version of the T-Series, called the T430u, later this year. Which raises the question Is the T420s a good choice, or is this thin and light losing ground to more modern designs? Let’s find out. Video overview Still in black When Lenovo took over the ThinkPad line from IBM there was widespread fear that the brand would be watered down. Instead, the company has remained shockingly stubborn. This T420s is thin, but its appearance is otherwise not much different than the laptops made ten years ago. From an aesthetic standpoint the use of matte black is a terrible choice, but that’s not the point. Functionality is the focus here. The expanses of non-gloss material ensure that fingerprints are rarely an issue. Dings and scratches also tend to be obscured. While a shiny new consumer laptop may look worse for wear a few years down the road, this laptop will display its scars with pride. The T420s’ designation as a thinner version of the T420 is literal. We’ve had the chance to see both, and the design elements are the same right down to the size of the display bezel, the hinges used and the location of the latch yes, this laptop has a display latch, a feature long gone from consumer products. Connectivity is the only major change. Due to its thinner profile this laptop offers only three USB ports, DisplayPort, VGA, Ethernet and a card reader. That’s down a couple ports to the normal T420, but it’s also much better than what is provided by most laptops of similar size. Better still, the ports are mostly along the rear of the laptop. That’s beneficial because it means peripheral cords are less likely to get in your way. Old-school keyboard Similarities between the T420 and T420s continue with the user interface. The keyboards on both appear to be identical, which means that the thinner model has the same excellent key feel. While most of the competitions — including HP’s own business-oriented Elitebooks — have transitioned over to island-style keyboards, Lenovo has continued on with beveled keys. The result is not as visually attractive, but we think this design is better for high-speed touch typing. Users new to the ThinkPad brand will undoubtedly be tripped up by the location of the function key, which is located where the Ctrl key is on every other keyboard ever produced. This strange layout has been used for years, so it’s unlikely to be changed soon. On the other hand, the T420s offers dedicated buttons for speaker mute, microphone mute and volume as well as double-sized Escape and Delete keys. These enhancements more than make up for the layout’s other oddities. The touchpad is extremely small for a laptop of this size. It’s obvious that you’re expected to use the trackpointer a little red pointing stick in the middle of the keyboard instead. Users who’ve never tackled a trackpointer before are bound to be confused by it, but there are benefits. Once you’ve become accustomed to it you can navigate via mouse without lifting your hands from the keyboard. Great for business, OK for entertainment The T420s is a business laptop, and as such it comes with a matte display, making it possible to use the laptop in many different environments. Even outdoors use is possible with the display’s brightness turned to maximum. Usually the downside to a matte display is less-than-stellar performance in movies and games, and that’s certainly the case here. You don’t get the “pop” of vibrant colors that you receive from a decent glossy laptop display. Performance in movies and games is still adequate, however — and better than matte displays we’ve seen in the past. Part of the reason for this may be the resolution of 1600x 900, which is high for a display. Audio quality has never been a focus of the ThinkPad brand, but the sound the 420s emits is surprisingly adequate. It has all the typical laptop issues with bass and distortion, but maximum volume is sufficiently loud and clear. Cool and quiet At idle, the fan of the T420s isn’t audible. At load, the fan spins up a bit, but still remains quiet. This is one of the least audible cooling systems that we’ve ever heard. You’d think that the low fan speed would result in warm operation, but that’s not the case. At idle most of the laptop’s surfaces are between 70 degrees and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, which is just barely above room temperature. Placing the laptop under load with a stress test did raise temperatures, but almost all surfaces remained under 90 degrees. The only potential source of discomfort is the left rear bottom of the laptop, which is where the exhaust is located. Temperatures here reached 103 degrees, which means that lap use could be uncomfortable if the processor is heavily stressed. That battery goes where? Though built to be thin and light, the T420s isn’t the most portable laptop around. Its 14-inch display puts it at a disadvantage compared to or laptop. The laptop’s weight of about pounds is far from classleading, as well. With that said, the T420s is reasonably small. It will fit in most bags that accommodate a laptop and is light enough to tote around on a regular basis. All ThinkPad T420s laptops come with a standard six-cell battery. In our Battery Eater’s Standard Test it lasted just one hour and nine minutes, but in the Reader’s Test is lasted a reasonable five hours and thirty two minutes. Typical mobile use will result in between four and five hours of endurance. That’s not bad, but it’s not great, either. If you need more life you can buy a three-cell bay battery for $120. This battery replaces the optical drive, which slides out using a fool-proof latch system. With the extended life battery installed, life in the Battery Eater Standard Test goes up to two hours and ten minutes and the Reader’s Test is extended to an impressive eight hours and thirty nine minutes. There’s an optional nine-cell battery for people who need even more life, but it was not provided with our review unit. Software As with other ThinkPads, our T420s came with Lenovo’s bundled ThinkVantage software. It includes a wide variety of software such as ThinkVantage Connections, which is a replacement to the standard Windows wireless manager. Unlike most such bundled solutions, the software offered by Lenovo is actually better than the standard Windows solution. This is also true for the Power Manager. Not everything about the included software is great, however. Lenovo includes advertisements for other ThinkVantage services in portions of the bundled software interface by default, which is annoying. In addition, the Virus Protection section recommends Norton Internet Security. It’d be more useful to recommend Microsoft’s free Security Essentials software. Strong performance Though thin, the T420s is not so thin that it prevents the use of normal Core i5 processors. That’s a major advantage older and thicker ultraportables have over newer Ultrabooks, and its shows in the performance numbers. SiSoft Sandra’s Processor Arithmetic test achieved a combined score of which sets a new record among the laptops we’ve reviewed. The 7-Zip score of 8,247 MIPS is also the highest we’ve yet recorded. Considering the strong processor performance, the score of 2,358 returned by PCMark 7 seems low. The reason for this, as mentioned in other reviews, is that PCMark 7 heavily favors solid state drives. If we take laptops equipped with SSDs out of the running the score of 2,358 is strong. Only the HP Envy 15 scored higher. Nvidia NVS 4200M discrete graphics can be had as an option, but our review unit did not come equipped with it. Instead it relies on Intel’s HD 3000, which can’t run 3DMark 11. 3DMark 06 returned a score of 3,701, which is a bit low for a laptop of this configuration. Combine this with a 1600 x 900 display and you have recipe for terrible gaming performance. Even older 3D games will need to be played with many detail options turned off. No one has ever mistaken a ThinkPad for a gaming laptop, however, so the lack of 3D gaming prowess isn’t a problem. Overall performance from the T420s is extremely strong, held back only by the mechanical hard drive. Solid state drives are available as an option. We highly recommend them if you’re interested in maximum performance. Conclusion The ThinkPad T420s is another example of Lenovo’s stubbornness. Besides the hardware, which is quick, there’s nothing about this laptop that is particularly modern. The entire design philosophy, from the boring matte black surfaces to the beveled key caps, could easily be at home on a laptop built five years ago. But being stubborn isn’t bad when you have it right. This is a laptop built for people who use their laptops for work every day, and for that use the T420s is perfect. It’s simply a miniaturized version of the T420, offering the same performance in a more portable package. While the T420 might be used around an office, the T420s can be taken nearly anywhere. You might expect to pay a higher price for the slimmer chassis, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Right now our review unit can be yours for just $999, while a similar T420 is $949. That’s not much of a difference. The only weakness of the T420s is battery life. It’s not terrible, but it’s a little below average for a modern ultraportable. The included three-cell extended battery does extend life, but it requires the removal of the optical drive and is an additional cost. It’d be nice if this laptop managed six or seven hours in real-world use without additional juice. One minor disadvantage can’t spoil this party, however. Thick and bulky, with a keyboard studded with enough auxiliary buttons to look like a space shuttle control panel, the T420 is as old-school as a laptop can be. It's also solid as a tank; not a rugged laptop per se, but outfitted with a spill-resistant keyboard and magnesium roll-cage chassis that most laptops don't have. And it's got more ports and features than most laptops, fighting the currently popular minimalist style. The Good The ThinkPad T420 has several things going for it performance, plenty of ports, excellent battery life, and a very comfortable keyboard. The Bad The design of the bulky, business-oriented T420 is positively Stone Age. It's also priced well above similar consumer laptops. No HDMI, no USB The Bottom Line The Lenovo ThinkPad T420 is as straight-up and unassuming as a business laptop can be on the surface, souped up with faster performance, long battery life, and a flexible selection of ports under the hood. In terms of design, nothing's really changed. The ThinkPad T420 is heavy, at pounds for a 14-inch laptop, and its body is nearly thick. Even so, the T420 isn't as hard to heft as you'd expect based on how it looks. What you gain here is durability, port selection, and a surprisingly good mix of speed and battery life. With its slightly faster-than-average Core i5-2520M CPU, the T420 rivaled Core i5 competitors in our benchmark tests, and the included Nvidia graphics are good enough to play a game like Street Fighter IV at medium settings. The battery life topped 7 hours in our CNET tests, besting the Apple MacBook you'd expect, the ThinkPad T420's keyboard is very comfortable it's the Lincoln Town Car of keyboards, or a comfy orthotic shoe. It may not be sexy, but damned if it isn't a great keyboard for writing. However, the plethora of additional and strangely laid-out function and teleconferencing buttons can overwhelm. The Esc and Delete keys are large, vertical, and elevated above the rest of the keyboard. That's odd, too, but not if you use ThinkPads. Overall, it feels like a command center, and clearly was meant to be thought of as touch pad isn't very wide for multitouch, but its stippled surface has great traction and sensitivity. Too many buttons above and below the pad may be good for accuracy in tight quarters like on planes, but they cramp the pad's real estate. Multitouch gestures are tough to pull off. Out of curiosity, I gave that red rubber trackpoint another try.
